DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

Before I started creating this project, I researched more information about the lack of face to face communication. I read few articles about how and why do young people got addict to their smartphone. Also, I found out how do people tried to fix the problem. The problem did not solve and got more severe than before as the ages of using technology decreased to three years old.

I started to think if people used a lot of technology, should I produce a project that needs technology to watch to bring out the message. So, I decided to choose to make a film for my project. To know more about this topic and how people talk about it, I found few videos about the lack of face to face communication. I tried to get ideas through those videos.

This “Communication” (Viktor Todorov, 2018) video from YouTube gave me some ideas for my film. This video talks about two people who meet each other randomly on the street, and the man would like to know the girl, but he doesn’t want to talk with her. He would like to message her until he went back home. Through this video, it brings out people who are nervous to talk to others. The video showed some text messages out for us to know what they are talking about. I think this is not a good idea to show the whole conversation out. But this inspired me to put a text box on my film.

To make my film ideas better, I watched one more video about “Communication” (20’s Talk, 2019) on YouTube. In this video, a character doesn’t use the phone; he tried to talk to others, but everyone ignores him, and he thinks people are insane. Another character accidentally bumped on others, and they send message to each other for apologies even they are stranger. At the end of the film, the main character put down his phone to meet someone. He felt lose when he is outside; he had no idea where to go. Suddenly, he got an accident and people go and take a video of him, and no one helps him except the man who tried to talk to others at the beginning. Through this video, it makes me have more plans for my film.

After having the ideas of the film, I started creating my storyboard to draft my film.

Then, I typed my script to let me able to start another production document. I plan my budget, call sheet and shot list to let me process my film later.

Before I start my film, I need to let my two actors sign the privacy policy, agreement forms, and continuity notes that I created. Also, I need to make the risk assessment form before everything started.

After finished all the documents, I have my first filming on 30th January 2021. On the day I finished the filming, I found the footage for my edit.

Before the first individual meeting with my supervisor Mez, I finished my 1st editing on my film. As I mention, it is the first draft of my film, and everything has not been done yet. Unlucky, the story is fine, but I didn’t film well on Scene 4 and 5; I need to reshoot it as the background of the video a bit messy, and I can see they are in the same place. It would attract my audience to look at the stuff that didn’t link to my story. In those scenes, the actors didn’t understand emotion enough, and they should speak longer on only the talking scene of the film. Also, there is the part that needs to be re-edit.

Because the actors and I couldn’t match our schedule to reshot before the second meeting, the second meeting didn’t discuss much. On 24th February 2021, I reshot Scene 4 and 5 to make the background not to be messy and alike. On the second draft of my video, I didn’t play my original soundtrack on my film. Also, my talking scene didn’t put as long as it should. So, there is another version coming up. After this meeting, it made me know more after shooting, as I didn’t have enough experience making a short film. This allows me to increase my skills in shooting.

On the third version, I add a text message box on the video for the message subtitles. As I don’t know how to make a message box in premiere pro, I searched online to let myself know how to put it on my film. “Make iPhone Text effect” (Flat Pack FX, 2018) taught me to create a message box on my film. Also, I don’t know how to add emoji on premiere pro, so I asked some professional editor and researched online. “Emoji’s in Adobe Premiere Pro” (Brooker Films, 2018) taught me how to insert emoji on the film. Through this film it made me enhance my skills in editing. It allows me to know how to create a message box and insert emoji.    Although it seems so easy, I may never know how it works if I didn't learn from others.

To make the audiences get more into the film, I found music on the YouTube library to match my film.

For this video, I chose two music, Sunset Dream (Cheel, 2020) and Voice (Patrick Patrikios, 2020), in YouTube Library.

At the last meeting with my supervisor on 30th March, my supervisor suggested that I make the flashback part shorter and make it into black and white to let the audience know it is talking about the pass.
